In German, the word ‘Spielkasten’ refers to a game box or cabinet. I was looking at games such as Connect Four, Pinball and Golf, which I have reconfigured as a ‘visual game’ of colour and abstract work of art. Initial ideas for this work referenced the game of Tetris, but I abandoned this to focus solely on the play between sculpture and painting. Hence I explore colour as an object, rather than a medium, manipulating and applying it to materials in non-traditional ways. Spiel meaning play by combining two and three-dimensional features. This artwork employs an intuitive approach to construction. Hence using diverse materials, some of which have been repurposed while others were made specifically for this piece.
