Flipper

Flipper engages with the field of expanded painting. To be precise at the intersection of sculpture, painting and glass. My ideas evolved from an interest in games because I think games can transcend age, culture, gender etc. Games are associated with fun, leisure, experimentation, risk and chance. These are all important aspects of the artistic process for me.

Here I explore the idea of the ‘ludic’ or ‘play’ using a playful approach to surface and space. Hence, I combine found and manufactured objects, including hand-blown glass, plastic, paper, off-cut wood, and paint. In this work, I reference the form of a pinball machine in a painterly arrangement where physical space replaces the canvas. Furthermore, this work invites the viewer to imagine and re-enact the chance of possibilities of play and movement. To conclude, I intended to create a sense of nostalgia in the viewer’s mind, along with a desire to touch and visually interact with the piece.
